In this blog I will tell about the journey of my mom, who decided to celebrate New Year in not traditional and usual way. Moreover, not just simple New Year, but a new wine year! Welcome to France, to the Beaujolais city to the festival of young wine! The official name of the Beaujolais nouveau event is Sarmental. It is in 1951 that the history of Beaujolais begins. Each year on the 3rd Thursday of November at the midnight in the torch-lights the first bottle of Beaujolais of a new crop is being opened; the clock tinkle out twelve and the barrel with a new wine is turned over the globe, which is hanging on top of the scene on the main villages place. Wine “Beaujolais nouveau” is made from early-season grapes type “Game” should be consumed until the March of the upcoming year. Young wine is being drunk immediate after its maturation, which takes not more than 1,5 months. As my mom told the most interesting part of the celebration was the «Parcours de degustation» (the tasting route). Upon arrival to Beaujolais village guests were given empty wine glasses, a questionnaire, in which they were supposed to mark the wines they liked and a map of 12 wineries – appellations, which are producing Beaujolais. In my mother’s words wine tasting (not young, but common Beaujolais) is similar to the real quest: you are walking along the village with a map and searching for the hiddenred rubber bottles – they indicate the wineries. Also, you try to guess the correct year when the wine was produced. The winner gets the prize – one box of “Beaujolais nouveau”!Unfortunately, my mother and her friends guessed only one year correctly, but that didn’t make mum sad as it was very exciting to search. Some wine-growers, in clothes of nuns, were pointing out the way to the tasting, others were inviting to the side street in total darkness. Everybody was trying to amaze and to catch one’s attention! All in all, the trip was incredibly interesting and cheerful because French people enjoy everything they do, and when you do something with a pleasure, that is usually done well!
